Kathivannur veeran
Kathivannur Veeran Theyyam is one of the most popular and heroic deities celebrated in North Malabar, Kerala. Unlike mythic gods, this Theyyam commemorates a real-life warrior named Mandappan, who was legendary for his exceptional martial arts skills. After being exiled by his father, Mandappan married a woman named Chemmarathi, but was later tragically killed in a fierce battle against thieves. The ritual performance is renowned for its highly athletic, acrobatic choreography mirroring Kerala’s Kalaripayattu combat style. The intricate geometric body paint and dynamic, intense sword movements beautifully encapsulate his tragic heroism and undying bravery.
