Gulikan Theyyam is a deeply revered ritualistic art form from North Malabar, Kerala, representing the ferocious Hindu deity of death and justice, an incarnation of Lord Yama. According to legend, after Lord Shiva destroyed Kalan (the original god of death) to save his devotee Markandeya, he created Gulikan from his left big toe to restore balance to the world. The performance is highly energetic and athletic, characterized by its minimal yet striking attire: body paint with three black lines over white paste (Arichanthu), and a headdress made of tender coconut leaves (Kuruthola).
