Kandanar Kelan

The performance embodies the spirit of Kelan, an ancient and hardworking farmer. Kelan was clearing a forest area in the Wayanad hills for cultivation.While under the influence of toddy, he set fire to the brushwood.To escape the raging flames, he climbed a banyan tree, unaware that two sacred serpents (Kali and Karali) resided there.The snakes bite him out of fear, and both Kelan and the serpents perished together in the fire.Later, the warrior deity Wayanattu Kulavan passed by, discovered the remains, and touched the ashes with his divine bow, bringing Kelan back to life as a companion deity.This is one of the most intense "fire theyyams."
